SME: Support to Migrants’ Entrepreneurship
Creating innovative facilities to support migrants economic initiatives in the countries of origin
The project SME, co-financed by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and led by Veneto Lavoro with the Veneto Region—Brussels Delegation, builds on the experience of Migravalue to further its model focusing on migration and its development potential in areas of rural Romania. The project has started in February 2009 and will last 22 months.
Objectives: SME main goals are: to highlight the entrepreneurship attitude in migrants; to make migrant population able to efficiently use economic resources deriving from their work activity in Veneto, and to channel economic and human capital in development tools for the countries of origin.
SME aims at generating a private-public partnership in order to collect main stakeholders able to generate ideal conditions to support economic initiatives of migrants in sending countries and improving information and communication channel between migrants associations and the respective communities of origin.
Target groups: would-be returnee entrepreneurs in migrants communities in Veneto Region, remittances recipient communities in Romania--especially in rural areas and financial and economic actors acting both in Veneto and in implementation area of Romania;
Activities: the project will develop a series of activities that aim at steering the potential of entrepreneurial, financial and human resources of migrants in the framework of circular migration and the migration and development nexus. In particular the activities aim at customizing public services (information desk and support to productive return entrepreneurial projects) in Veneto and Romania for the promotion of productive returns as well as mapping, adapting and developing financial tools supporting successful development in the origin areas, with a focus on rural Romanian areas.

Successful Paths (SU.PA) Supporting Human and Economic Capital of Migrants
Led by the Veneto Region- Dpt. for International Relations, International Cooperation, Human Rights and Equal Opportunities and co-financed by the Thematic Programme of Cooperation with Third Countries in the Areas of Migration and Asylum, the project SU.PA, aims at lifting some barriers to development in Senegal by acting on the migrants resources, adapting the ratio and some of the tools developed in the MIGRAVALUE project to the Italian, French and Senegalese context.
Objectives: The overall objective of the project is to support the human and economic value of migrants, by promoting effective tools to facilitate return paths and encouraging the economic development of the Country of origin (Senegal).
Target groups: The population of Senegalese would-be entrepreneurs migrants in Veneto, Marche, and France; Remittances’ recipient communities in Senegal; Return migrants, high skilled migrants.
Activities will develop a strategy, and concrete financial tools in order to deal with problems such as difficulty in the access to credit both for migrants and returnees with entrepreneurial ideas, lack of guarantees needed in new business start-ups, waste of economic resources in sending and receiving countries due to the high cost of transfer of remittances. The project will reinforce the private-public partnership in Italy, France and Senegal to foster conditions to support policies and economic initiatives of migrants in sending and receiving countries. Activities include: Modelling and implementetion of the Guarantee Fund ;Creation of return desks and the “Economic Return Task Force in Kaolack; Innovative financial tools for migrants.

UN-EC JOINT MIGRATION AND DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE
MIGRAVALUE has been selected as a “good practice” in the migration and development approach and presented in the K-fair organized by UNDP as implementing agency of this new-born initiative that aims at creating more knowledge of and discussion on migration as a development factor of developing countries.
Veneto Lavoro, as partner of the City to City network, has been involved in the mapping of good practices on M&D (soon to be published on this site) involving local authorities in Europe and 16 target countries.
